In Flander’s Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flander’s fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flander’s fields.

I can’t believe Sesame Street has been around the same number of years that I have.  Happy 40th Sesame Street.

“When the show started in 1969 (”Sesame Street” will celebrate its 40th anniversary on November 10), the concept of educational television programming was nothing short of revolutionary. “Sesame Street” was originally intended as a learning tool for inner-city children — not only as a supplement to their lessons in math and the ABCs but to teach them to be good people and show them that learning can be fun.”

I grew up watching children of different shades play together, learn together and live together in a big city, urban setting.  Maybe it wasn’t completely realistic, it was just a little sugar coated, but it did influence me.  I have many fond memories.  Where would I be without Big Bird, Oscar and Ernie and Bert.  I still remember the groovy song that taught me to count from 1-12.

Or the sweet song about two little girls and a little doll house, giggling when the two kitty cats went on a spree in the little doll house.

What do you remember from Sesame Street?  How did it influence you?

Let me know, ask your parents.

Today we learned about conjunctions.  We had a good time ‘gluing’ words and phrases together.  If you’re my age you’ll remember this little movie from Saturday mornings.

This is our first week of our regular schedule.  I’m looking forward to rolling up our sleeves, getting to work and having fun.  I was very happy to have Ms. Hope as a T.O.C. last week.  She let me know our class worked very well and did their best, a great first impression.  I’m feeling much better thanks to those two days at home.  I was very sorry to miss the Terry Fox Run but I heard it was a lot of fun.  I can’t wait to see Mr. Aird’s new hair style….

This week we will be continuing with our spelling, but I will introduce the spelling contract with only a few choices at first.  Students will be given more and more choice for their contract as we continue through the first term.

I will be introducing the class to our new Math program.  The class will be working from a text book (new to them) as well as two work books.  We are very lucky to have these resources provided by the district.

Our P.E. time will continue with basic games.  I am using this time to ensure that students are able to follow my expectations for game play and moving safely.

See you bright and early Monday morning.
